How Palliative and Hospice Care Improve the Quality of Care

Providing a holistic health-care approach does not end in delivering treatment alone. After all, medical care only treats the physical body. To address the emotional, social, spiritual, and practical aspects of life, palliative and hospice care come into the picture.

Differentiating Palliative and Hospice Care

Although related, palliative and hospice care have their own differences.

Palliative care is a resource that is given to patients who suffer from a serious condition. Some of these illnesses include heart failure, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia. Palliative care is given with one main goal—and that is to provide comfort and relief of symptoms during a patient’s hardest times.

Palliative care can be given simultaneously with hospice care. Also known as end-of-life care, hospice care is given to patients whom doctors think have only less than six months to live. Sometimes, an illness can take its toll on the body, which ends up rejecting all treatments.

However, this does not mean that a patient should suffer the symptoms and discomfort that it brings.

Hospice care, like palliative care, delivers comprehensive comfort by providing treatment for symptom relief and assisting the patient in his or her daily activities. This support also extends to the patient’s family, who may be the most distraught at this time. Hospice care can be offered at home or in a facility by a medical team, which includes doctors, nurses, spiritual advisers, social workers, and volunteers.

This genuine support helps keep a patient’s morale up during his or her final days.

Holistic Approach to Health Care

Receiving a cure may treat a certain illness, but it does little in keeping a patient’s dignity during the weakest moments. This is why palliative and hospice care are important facets of health care that should always be considered during treatment. They don’t only help manage symptoms—they also help people achieve their best quality of life.

To summarize the details above, here is an infographic by Cables and Sensors that aims to creatively show and emphasize the impact it brings to provide better patient care.
