For those who suffer from SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder, fall and winter can be a tough time. Shorter days and changes in weather can cause a lack of energy and mood swings. With an abundance of treatments at your disposal there is hope in curing or at least helping your condition. Many factors of SAD, whether it be your Circadian Rhythm or an imbalance of brain chemicals, can be treated in a variety of ways. Without further ado, let's jump into this disorder and discover how it can be treated appropriately.


What is SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a recurrent mood disorder that typically affects people in the fall and winter. There are those who are affected by this same disorder in the spring and summer; however those cases are sporadic. Symptoms of SAD include but are not limited to, decreased energy, lack of concentration, weight fluctuation, increased fatigue, and sleep cravings.



Treatment Options



Otherwise known as light therapy, phototherapy is one of the most common forms of treatment for those suffering from SAD. Research has shown that sitting in front of a light therapy box for thirty minutes a day, preferably in the morning, can activate your Circadian Rhythm and suppress the release of melatonin in your brain.


Mimicking sunlight or forms of natural light that you'd receive in the spring or summer can assist those suffering from SAD. Dawn simulators are a type of alarm clock that wakes you by gradually increasing the amount of light in your room. The purpose behind this alarm clock is to wake you more naturally with light, versus waking up instantaneously with ringtones or music. Many senior living facilities have large beautiful windows and individuals can open the windows and blinds to let in more natural light. 



Another fantastic way to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder is by aromatherapy. Oils from aromatherapy can influence the limbic system in your brain, which in turn control your mood and circadian rhythm. Adding a few drops of essential oils into a bath is a great way to find some relaxation at the end of a long day. Oils from the Poplar Tree especially, have been scientifically proven to help depressive disorders.



Although any form of exercise would be beneficial towards treating SAD, exercise outdoors if possible to maximize wellness. Additionally, exercise is a great way to eliminate the worry of weight fluctuation associated with SAD, by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you find yourself struggling to exercise indoors, either at a gym or home, trying moving toward a window to soak up the essence of the outdoors.


Create a Daily Schedule:

For those that have trouble sleeping as a result of their seasonal affective disorder, creating a daily schedule and abiding by it can do wonders for you. It's easier to get more sleep if your day is scheduled out. Instead of waking up in the afternoon and missing the best parts of your day, come up with set times to wake up, exercise, eat, etc.… so that you can enjoy natural sunlight and sleep soundly at the end of the day.


Travel Somewhere Warm:

Visiting warmer climates during the winter season can improve the attitudes of those affected by seasonal affective disorder. If you are looking for a change of scenery, no matter how long it lasts, a vacation might be for you. The anticipation of your trip can leave you feeling better in the days or even weeks before you depart. Correspondingly, you may feel better in the days/weeks after you return home as well. Everyone needs a vacation at some point, if your SAD is making you feel down and out consider a vacation, if possible, to give you that boost.


Eat Healthily:

Those who eat more fruits and vegetables are more likely to avoid issues related to anxiety and depression. Produce in general is an excellent source of healthy nutrition and has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety. So if you are feeling down and are unable to exercise, try including more natural produce in your diet, as you may experience similar benefits to exercise itself.


Try Volunteering:

Participating in philanthropic work is an excellent way to brighten your mood. Assisting others who haven't been fortunate in their lives can give you a new perspective on life. Volunteering can also be an excellent cycle-breaker for those suffering from depression. Actions supersede motivation, and sometimes all you need to do is get out and about, regardless of reason.


Create an Uplifting Music Playlist:

Allow the music to take you away. Whether you snap your fingers, tap your foot, sway your hips, or whatever movement it may be, allow yourself to be in a state of spaciousness to relax. Many songs contain lyrics that provide positive and uplifting messages, choose whichever songs feel most relevant to you so that you have a playlist for your more difficult days.


Talk to Those Close to You:

Make sure to communicate with those who are close to you. If you are suffering from symptoms associated with SAD, there is no shame in reaching out to a loved one for help. Internalizing feelings is a horrible way to handle stress and anxiety; opening up to those who care about you is an excellent way to erase doubt and make sure your voice is heard.


Contact a Medical Professional:

If you have attempted all or some of the amateur treatments listed above with little to no success, then it may be time to consult a medical professional. SAD is a severe disorder that should not be taken lightly if self-medication tactics aren't having any effect on your disorder don't hesitate to contact a doctor. Medical professionals are immensely more knowledgeable on the subject, and they have exclusive access to medications that can help with seasonal affective disorder.

Top Movies Honoring Our Veterans

As we transition into the fall, we inch ever closer to Veteran’s day. Over the years, there have been a multitude of movies produced in an effort to honor our military by offering realistic portrayals of survival and brotherhood. Below is a randomly compiled list of some of the top movies that rightfully honor our veterans.


An old school television-There are many movies available today that honor our veterans.


Sands of Iwo Jima

Starring John Wayne in one of his most iconic roles as Sergeant Stryker, this movie follows a harrowing story about a drill sergeant and his defiant recruit. Beginning stateside, the movie depicts many hardships experienced by main characters and portrays Sergeant Stryker himself as a man who lacks empathy and sympathy for his recruits both at home and on the beaches of Japan.


As the movie progresses, Stryker is left with impossible decisions regarding the safety of his platoon. Additionally, the sergeant himself battles his own personal demons throughout the film. Overall, the movie speaks to the bravery of a commander as he faceless multiple dilemmas while trying to keep the men surrounding him alive. An emblematic ending regarding Sergeant Stryker can bring tears to all viewers; as the overall camaraderie and brotherhood formed in this movie perfectly resembles the lasting photo of four soldiers raising the american flag on Iwo Jima.



Coming Home

This movie focuses more on the trials and tribulations of coming home after war; as well as tackling the difficulty women face when their husbands deploy. The movie surrounds two main characters throughout the film; with Jon Voight playing a victim of war who was paralyzed overseas and Jane Fonda playing a hospital volunteer whose husband is currently deployed in Vietnam.


Voight and Fonda’s relationship blossoms throughout the film, and this suddenly leaves Fonda in a tough position once her husband returns home from Vietnam unexpectedly. This movie incredibly depicts all the hardships men and women involved in the war deal with and is absolutely worth a watch.



Born On the Fourth of July

An inspiring true story, Born On the Fourth of July tells the tale of Ron Kovic; a paralyzed Vietnam vet whose strength and will, both mentally and physically, are tested during his recovery. A powerhouse performance by Tom Cruise perfectly encapsulates the lack of support our country gave Vietnam Veterans upon their return home.


As the movie progresses Kovic begins to lose his initially optimistic attitude upon returning home. Startling discoveries amongst the Veteran Health Care System and the public’s overall perception of the Vietnam war eventually leads to Kovic becoming an anti-war and human rights activist. It’s a powerful story representing the psychological warfare soldiers deal with even after they return home safely. The move is definitely worth viewing if you have the time.



Gran Torino

A Clint Eastwood flick, Gran Torino follows the story of an elderly Korean war veteran and the ever-awkward yet kindred relationship with his Korean neighbors. At the beginning of the film, Eastwood’s character is seen as a tough-nosed, racist war veteran who lives in a town swarming with Asian gang members. With the recent passing of his wife and now facing his own health concerns, Eastwood finds himself perpetually upset and commonly takes out his frustrations on his neighbors.


The crux of the movie is when Eastwood’s neighbor attempts to steal his most prized possession, an old Gran Torino, and subsequently gets caught. An unsuspecting relationship eventually blossoms between the car thief and Eastwood, as Eastwood overcomes his personal prejudices and health concerns for the greater good of his neighbors’ family. It is a well-done film that shows how even the most stubborn personalities can change over time. Be warned, you’ll be taken on an emotional rollercoaster in this one.



American Sniper

Another movie with Clint Eastwood at the helm, this excruciatingly realistic movie follows the life of heavily decorated US Navy Seal Chris Kyle during his four tour duty in Iraq. Played by Bradley Cooper, Kyle struggles throughout the film with both keeping his servicemen alive tour after tour, and dealing with the fallout of being an absentee father and husband.


This movie pulls at the heartstrings of its audience in a multitude of ways, and this is definitely one of the movies where you keep a tissue box nearby. From Navy Seal training to his final return home, Eastwood gives you a front row seat into the trials and tribulations that accompany Kyle both during and after his military service. It’s a fantastic representation of what our service men and women deal with as they deploy multiple times.



The Hurt Locker

This movie follows the story of a bomb squad in Iraq, with a heavy focus on a character played by Jeremy Renner. The Hurt Locker explores life out on the battlefield as well as at home, while masterfully adding suspenseful moments throughout. You’ll find yourself at the edge of your seat a lot of the time, while simultaneously being sucked into the raw emotional power of the film.


Providing a perfect blend of suspenseful bomb defusions and a heartfelt journey back home with these men, The Hurt Locker offers the whole package to any moviegoer. The internal conflict that Renner’s character suffers from throughout the film has the ability to leave you speechless as his decision-making unfolds. All in all, this is one of the more emotionally engaging war movies there are.




In totality, with fall fast approaching and Veteran’s day getting closer and closer, it’s the perfect time to pop on a military movie. With a plethora of options, including many more films than the six I’ve listed here, you can be sure to find the right movie for you. Whether you are searching for a drama, action/adventure, biography, or thriller, there have been countless classic films representing our military already created. Make sure to check some out over the coming month, and maybe you’ll gain a greater understanding of what service men and women individually sacrifice to defend our country.

The Signs of Alzheimer's vs. Forgetfulness

As you age, forgetting things becomes a more normal aspect of everyday life. In fact, our world today has become especially dependent on reminders. Whether it be a notification on your smartphone or a bullet point on your refrigerator's whiteboard, there are many ways in which we are reminded of what to do on a daily basis.

So the important factor as you age is being able to determine when forgetfulness becomes a problem. How is anyone to know when forgetfulness is converting into early onset Alzheimer's or other mental illnesses? Here are a few signs and symptoms that can help differentiate normal aging processes versus early developing mental illnesses.

Long-term/Short-term memory

The main way to recognize whether or not your forgetfulness should be concerning is determining what memories you struggle with retrieving. An inability to recollect long-term memories is normal as you age. Generally, some combination of trigger points, otherwise known as “cues” should help bring that memory back.

However, if context clues have no affect on your remembrance of long-term memories, and you severely struggle with remembering recent short-term memories, it could be time to contact your doctor. You may be beginning to experience symptoms of early onset Alzheimer’s.




As you age, your attention span naturally decreases, and that alone isn’t cause for major concern. The more prominent actions to analyze is whether or not your linguistics and understanding of the situation are deteriorating. If you can understand what you are doing and why you are doing it, even if it’s at a slower rate than when you were younger, you’re ok.

The biggest cause for concern is an inability to remember correct vocabulary structure or total lack of concentration in general. At this point, symptoms of early onset Alzheimer’s might be rearing their ugly head, and a doctor’s visit might be best.



Source Memory

Source memory refers to the origin point of information. In other words, source memory is where or when what you’ve seen or heard came from. This is one of the more straightforward concerns to have regarding memory loss. If you are struggling to recollect who said what or when/where something was discussed, you may be experiencing difficulty with source memory, which can in turn develop into Alzheimer’s or other mental health related illnesses.



Repetitive Habits

One of the more telling signs of forgetfulness is communicating in a repetitive manner. The main concern here is an increased difficulty in remembering what was said, resulting in common repetition of the same statement. Now, everyone forgets something every once in a while so it’s not cause for major concern if you or someone you know repeats themselves on occasion. The focus here should be the rate at which someone repeats themselves. For example, a daily occurrence of repetitive communication is concerning behavior and a doctor’s visit should be scheduled promptly.



Chronological Memory

Chronological memory refers to the order in which events took place. Similar to source memory, issues with chronological memory are easily identifiable. If you’re struggling to remember orders of events, you’re struggling with chronological memory. As it is with source memory, issues with chronological memory can further develop into Alzheimer’s and other mental illnesses if left untreated. If you or a loved one are noticing a constant struggle to remember orders of events, it may be best to see a doctor.



Analytical/Numerical Abilities

As you age, there is no doubt that tasks you deemed medial and simple when you were younger become increasingly difficult. One of the most prominent examples of this is a deterioration in analytical/numerical ability. Naturally, some people don’t have strong numerical skills in the first place, so this sign is less of a cause for concern than others. Having said that, a steep drop off in numerical/analytical ability could be a direct result of early onset Alzheimer’s.

Additionally, if you or a loved one are experiencing severely increased irritability while using analytical or numerical data, continue to monitor the situation as it’s especially hard to differentiate forgetfulness versus symptoms of mental illnesses in this case. When in doubt, contact a doctor as they will have far more insight on individual situations.



Trouble Identifying Locations

As far as concerns go, this may be of highest priority. If you struggle with understanding or realizing where you are and how you got there, then you may be experiencing one of the most common indicators of early onset Alzheimer’s. A complete lack of self awareness is a tell tale sign of an early Dementia-related illness setting in.

Distinguishing a consistent lack of self-awareness is the most difficult part of identifying this issue. The signs should be transparent, as previously explained. Consistency is also imperative, as the warnings should be obvious and abundant. Make sure to immediately consult your doctor if repetitive behavior occurs.

Moving days are always a stressful event, and that stress tremendously increases for those who suffer from memory issues. As emotional as it is to leave a previous home for a new one, those with memory impairment are left more confused than anything. That’s why it is essential to add an extra level of defining care on moving days. Between having familiar faces present to planning the entirety of the day well before moving, there are many preventative measures that can be taken to help your moving day go as smooth as possible. Therefore, let’s dive into a few ways you can assist your loved one with dementia move worry-free.



Preparation Takes Precedent

The most important aspect from moving is undoubtedly being properly prepared for moving day. By setting up and planning out the day before it happens, you make the experience immensely easier for your loved one. Additionally, make sure to let your loved one participate in the move. A great example of this is letting them decide what belongings they’d like to pack. By actively participating, your loved one can feel more in control about his or her move; as opposed to having no say at all during the process. Chances are if you have a loved one suffering from dementia you’re pretty patient in your own right however if not, make sure to prioritize this on your moving day.


Communication is Key

Throughout the entire process of moving there is no more important factor to consider than communication. Knowing what your loved one needs becomes more difficult with dementia; as it does with aging in general. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that you properly communicate with your loved one while moving. It’s simply too easy to fall into the trap of “taking over” moving day by disregarding all of your loved ones needs in an effort to move in as quickly as possible. Put an emphasis on communication, it will save you time and stress.


Incorporate Familiar Items

One of the best ways to limit the amount of forgetfulness that is to be experienced during moving is to incorporate as many items as possible that your loved one is familiar with. Maybe a scented candle brings back some homely memories, or a family photo allows them to recall a fond experience with those they care about most. The item itself is rather meaningless to select, as long as it is associated with something your loved one would find positively memorable. It’s all about bring a sense of familiarity to their new home. The better you can achieve this, the more welcoming your new home will appear to your loved one.



Now, for those who already use calendars in your daily life this isn’t as prevalent to you; as you are assuredly aware of the positives associated with calendars. For everyone else, calendars can be an excellent source of organization and structure for your loved one suffering from dementia. Eliminate the fear of forgetfulness with the calamity that ensues moving. As you uproot one home lifestyle for another, adding any amount of organization and structure can work wonders for you. The last thing anyone needs is to miss an important doctor’s visit because it wasn’t written down anywhere.



Playing music is definitely one of the easiest things to do as you move and it can help improve overall morale for the day! Piggybacking off of a previous statement, music has the ability to familiarize someone with their surroundings, even if it’s their first time at a new place. Making a playlist of your loved ones favorite tunes can absolutely lighten up the moving day mood for all involved. For especially tough days music is a fantastic escape, and if your loved one is struggling with their home transition then putting on that special playlist can make all of the difference.


Have Relatives Be There On Moving Day

The proposition of someone with dementia moving homes is terrifying. One of the best ways to help with this is to invite as many close relatives/friends over as you can, in order to offer your loved one some sense of familiarity. Even if your loved one struggles with recognizing faces, there is still ample opportunity to quell their concerns with a family gathering of any sort. Get together, talk about your fondest memories, and watch your loved one feel increasingly secured in their new home.

In conclusion, there is a lot to consider when attempting to move someone suffering from dementia or other memory-related illnesses. New places and faces may only add to receding recognition and processing skills. As a result, there needs to be a concerted effort to provide calm, welcoming environment when moving.
